Saturday's Loot: Estate Sale-ing with Alice and Sammy

When I was growing up in upstate NY, my mom had an antique business so I spent a lot of time with her scouring flea markets, estate sales, garage sales, and attending antique shows. I always enjoyed doing these things, even as a child. I still love them! I hit an estate sale this morning, which I found out about only by chance. Would you believe that as I was walking in, Jocebeane drove up?! (She likes estate sales too).

Although Sammy and Alice do not attend the sales with me, (dogs not usually being allowed at such events -- discrimination, we say), they generally like to look over my purchases and give their considered opinion.

Here, Alice gives a figurative "thumbs up" to a small Victorian side chair:

She also liked this drawing that I think dates from the mid-nineteenth century. It was hard to get a good picture because the glass reflects light. The frame appears to be the original.

Sammy, however, was skeptical of the value of my purchases:

Everyone was enthusiastic about the vintage 1950s-era horse bookends that I bought for Baby Bean:

I thought these would look really cute on BB's desk in her room - BB agreed!

Have a happy rest-of-the-weekend!

Hmm, I think Sammy has a future as an appraiser on "Antiques Roadshow".

These are all great finds - I really like the horse bookends. And thanks so much for your purrs and good thoughts for Blackie - very much appreciated.

P.S. I keep forgetting to tell you that watching seasons 1 and 2 is a great way to see if you like "Mad Men" (I was able to find plot summaries on line to catch up otherwise I might have been lost!) And you're right that it is not very suitable for young people :) (guessing they would think it was boring too!)

We love the bookends! We had a house clearance a few weeks ago - pity you were nowhere near Scotland!
We managed to fill an entire van for a charity workshop that restore old furniture - some of it ours but mostly my parents. Been hanging onto it for the past four years!

Great finds! Alice clearly recognizes true treasures. We value Sammy's opinion too, and we are confident your finds will pass his sniff test with flying colors.

Better look out -- judging from her expression, it looks like Alice is thinking about claiming that chair as her very own...!

Hi furriends,
it's been silent on your bloggie for a while and we do miss you. We'd like to assume everything is okay and that you are just busy... Anyway, we hope the New Year is treating you good so far.
Lots of love from our little city in Germany to your place - and kitty kisses!
